WebP to PNG Converter

PNG and JPG both open in almost any app, but they suit different images. Choose PNG when:

• The image has a transparent background, such as a logo, icon, sticker or product cut-out. PNG keeps it; JPG fills it with white.
• It’s made of text, lines or flat colour, like a diagram, chart or screenshot, which stays crisp as a PNG.
• You’re going to edit it. A PNG can be saved again and again without losing anything more.

For an ordinary photo without transparency, WebP to JPG gives a far smaller file: one 512 × 512 photo came out at 416 KB as PNG and 58 KB as JPG.

Fully transparent areas stay fully transparent, and partly transparent ones, such as soft edges, drop shadows and glows, keep their exact level of transparency. In our tests every solid pixel kept its exact colour as well.

The only difference is in faint, partly see-through pixels: browsers round their colours slightly while drawing the image, so they can shift by a shade. You won’t see it when the image is displayed.

WebP comes in two kinds. Lossless WebP stores every pixel exactly, like PNG but more compactly. Lossy WebP discards detail, like JPG, which is how it gets so small. Both can have transparency, and the file name doesn’t tell you which kind you have.

Either way, the PNG looks exactly like the WebP does now: nothing further is lost, and nothing lost earlier comes back. What differs is the size:

So if a PNG comes out ten or more times the size of its WebP, the WebP was probably lossy. That PNG is still a faithful copy, and a good choice for editing, but for sharing a photo a JPG will be much smaller.

• Animated WebPs become a still PNG of the first frame. This converter saves still images only.
• EXIF data stored in a WebP, such as a date or camera details, isn’t copied. The PNG contains the picture and nothing else.
