How to make a favicon
Add your image
Drop a square PNG, JPG or SVG, at least 512 × 512 pixels, onto the box above. Type your site’s name in Site Name for the web manifest.
Generate the icons
Press Generate Favicons. You get favicon.ico, six PNG icons and a site.webmanifest file, to download one at a time or all together.
Download and add them
Press Download ZIP, upload the files to the root of your site, then paste the HTML shown below the results into your pages.
What a favicon is and where it appears
A favicon is the small icon that stands for your website. It appears in browser tabs, bookmarks and history, on phone home screens when someone adds your site, and next to your site’s name in Google search results. Without one, browsers show a plain placeholder.
What’s in the download
| File | Size | What uses it |
|---|---|---|
| favicon.ico | 16, 32 and 48 px | Browsers and apps that look for /favicon.ico at the root of your site. |
| favicon-16x16.png | 16 px | Browser tabs on standard screens. |
| favicon-32x32.png | 32 px | Browser tabs on high-resolution screens, and bookmarks. |
| favicon-48x48.png | 48 px | A spare copy for services that ask for a 48 px icon. |
| apple-touch-icon.png | 180 px | iPhone and iPad home screens. It has a solid background (white unless you choose another colour). |
| android-chrome-192x192.png | 192 px | Android home screens, through the web manifest. |
| android-chrome-512x512.png | 512 px | Android and Chrome when a large icon is needed, such as installing your site like an app. |
| site.webmanifest | Text | Your site’s name and which icons Android and Chrome should use. |
| favicon-html.txt | Text | The HTML to paste into your pages. |
Every icon is square. The ICO is a real multi-size icon file, not a renamed PNG, and transparent areas of your image stay transparent in every file except the Apple touch icon.
How to add a favicon to your website
Upload the files to the root folder of your site, so they open at addresses like yoursite.com/favicon.ico. In projects with a public folder, such as Vite, Next.js or Astro, put them there. Then paste these lines into the head of every page, or your shared header template:
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" sizes="32x32" href="/favicon-32x32.png">
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" sizes="16x16" href="/favicon-16x16.png">
<link rel="apple-touch-icon" sizes="180x180" href="/apple-touch-icon.png">
<link rel="manifest" href="/site.webmanifest">There’s no line for favicon.ico: browsers and other apps look for it at the root by themselves, so it only works if it’s there.
If your site lives in a subfolder, change the paths in the HTML and in site.webmanifest to match. The manifest is plain text, so you can edit its name and colours (white by default) in any text editor; the Color Palette Extractor can find your brand colour’s hex code.
Adding a favicon in WordPress
WordPress has its own Site Icon setting, so there’s no need to upload files or edit your theme. Since WordPress 6.5 it’s in Settings > General; in older versions it’s under Appearance > Customize > Site Identity. In a block theme, the Site Logo block in the Site Editor can also set your logo as the site icon. Wording varies with themes and plugins.
WordPress wants a square image of at least 512 × 512 pixels, and android-chrome-512x512.png from the ZIP is exactly that. WordPress makes the smaller sizes and adds the HTML itself, so don’t paste the snippet into your theme as well.
Designing a favicon that works at 16 pixels
A favicon is mostly seen at 16 or 32 pixels. What reads well that small:
- One simple shape: a letter, a symbol or the mark from your logo. A full logo with words becomes a smudge.
- Strong contrast that works on light and dark browser tabs.
- A square source of at least 512 pixels, or an SVG. Smaller images are enlarged for the bigger icons and look soft, and the generator warns you when that will happen, naming the icons affected. SVGs stay sharp at every size.
- Fill the square. Images that aren’t square get transparent space at the sides, so the icon comes out smaller. Crop to 1:1 first, or remove empty edges with the Image Trimmer.
- A transparent background, so the tab colour shows through.
The exception is the Apple touch icon: iPhones and iPads show transparent areas of a home-screen icon as black. So the generator fills apple-touch-icon.png with a solid colour, white unless you pick another under iPhone icon background. If your logo is white, choose your brand colour instead.
Why your favicon isn’t updating
Browsers keep favicons for a long time, so a new icon can take a while to appear. To see it straight away:
- Open your site in a private window or another browser.
- Open the icon file itself, refresh it, then reload your page.
- Clear any caching plugin or CDN cache so visitors get the new files.
- Add a version to the paths in your HTML, such as /favicon-32x32.png?v=2, so browsers fetch it again.
- For a home-screen icon, remove the shortcut and add the site again.
Google refreshes favicons on its own schedule, which can take days or weeks.
Your image never leaves your device
Every file is made by your browser, on your own device, so your image is never uploaded. That matters when it’s an unreleased logo or a client’s brand.
You can check this yourself: open your browser’s developer tools, watch the Network tab and generate your icons. The only requests are anonymous page-view counts, described in our privacy policy. After your first visit, the generator works offline too.
Frequently asked questions
Is this favicon generator free?
Yes. There’s no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many favicon sets you make.
What size should a favicon be?
Start from a square image of at least 512 × 512 pixels, or an SVG. The generator makes 16, 32 and 48 px icons for browsers, 180 px for Apple devices, and 192 and 512 px for Android. A smaller image still works, but you’ll see a warning: the icons bigger than it are enlarged and look blurry.
Should I use ICO or PNG?
Both. Current browsers use the PNG icons linked in your HTML, and favicon.ico is the fallback. The download includes both.
Do I still need a favicon.ico file?
Yes, it’s worth keeping. Some browsers, feed readers and other tools ask for /favicon.ico directly without reading your HTML.
What is an Apple touch icon?
apple-touch-icon.png is the 180 × 180 pixel icon iPhones and iPads use when someone adds your site to their home screen. iOS shows transparent areas as black, so the generator gives it a solid background: white, or the colour you choose under iPhone icon background.
Why isn’t my favicon showing?
Usually it’s the browser’s cache, so try a private window first. If it’s still missing, open yoursite.com/favicon-32x32.png to check the files are in your root folder, and check the HTML is inside the head of the page.
Can I use an SVG favicon?
You can add an SVG here and it’s drawn sharply at every size, but the download has PNG and ICO files, not the SVG itself. Chrome, Edge and Firefox also accept an SVG favicon: upload yours and add <link rel="icon" type="image/svg+xml" href="/favicon.svg">, keeping the other files for browsers that don’t.
Can a favicon have a transparent background?
Yes. Transparency is kept in favicon.ico and the other PNGs, so the tab colour shows through. The Apple touch icon is the exception: it gets a solid background, because iOS would show transparent areas as black.
My logo isn’t square. What happens?
It’s scaled to fit and centred, with transparent space on the shorter sides, so nothing is cut off or stretched. For a bigger icon, crop it square first.
Will my favicon show in Google search results?
Google shows a site’s favicon next to its name in results. It uses the icon linked from your home page, which must be square and not blocked by robots.txt. Changes can take days or weeks to appear.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. Every file is made in your browser, on your device, which is also why it works offline after your first visit.
