Blur & Pixelate Images

Add Blur Effects

Blur, pixelate or motion-blur whole images, one at a time or in bulk, with a live preview. It all happens in your browser, so your images are never uploaded.

How to blur or pixelate an image

  1. Add your images

Drop JPG, PNG, WebP or iPhone HEIC photos onto the box above, or press Choose images. Every image you add gets the same effect.

  2. Choose a blur

Pick Gaussian, Pixelate or Motion and drag the slider until the live preview looks right, then press Apply Blur.

  3. Download

Press Download to save the blurred copy, in the same format as the original. With several images, Download All gives you one ZIP.

Gaussian, pixelate or motion blur?

Each type has its own setting, applied to every image in the batch:

TypeWhat it doesSettingUse it for
GaussianSoftens the image evenly, like an out-of-focus lens.Blur Radius, 1 to 50 px (default 10).Soft backgrounds behind text.
PixelateFills each square with its average colour, the mosaic look.Pixel Size, 2 to 50 px (default 10): the width of each square.Retro and pixel-art looks, teasers.
MotionSmears the image in one direction, like a moving camera.Blur Amount, 1 to 50 px (the streak’s length), and Angle, 0° to 360°.Speed and movement effects.

For motion blur, 0° streaks sideways and 90° up and down. The streak runs both ways, so opposite angles, such as 45° and 225°, look almost the same. If you change a setting after applying, press Apply Blur again.

It blurs the whole image, not part of it

The effect covers the entire image. It can’t blur just a face, a number plate or the background behind a person. Instead:

  • To remove something near an edge, such as a name under a screenshot, crop it out.
  • For a sharp subject on a blurred background, use your phone’s portrait mode, or a photo editor with masks.
  • For a blurred backdrop, blur a copy here and place the sharp original on top in your design software.

Blur isn’t safe for hiding private information

Blurring or pixelating is not a secure way to redact text, faces or numbers. Pixelated text can sometimes be read back by software that tries likely words until the squares match, a light blur can be partly reversed, and a blurred face can still be recognised by someone who knows it.

For passwords, card numbers, addresses, ID documents and anything else that must stay private, cover it with a solid box in an image editor, or crop it out, and check the saved copy before sharing it.

The saved copy has no EXIF metadata, so camera details and GPS location aren’t carried over. To see what a photo contains, use the metadata viewer.

Blur strength and image size

The settings are in pixels of the full-size image, so a 10 px blur is strong on an 800 px wide image but subtle on a 4,000 px phone photo, which needs about 50 for the same look.

  • The live preview is a small copy with the blur scaled to match, so it shows how the full-size result will look.
  • In a batch, smaller images come out more blurred. Resize them to one size first if they should match.
  • Need more than 50? Blur the downloaded copy again: two gaussian passes at 50 blur about as much as one at 70.
  • Edges: gaussian and motion blur repeat the border pixels, so edges stay solid rather than fading. Pixelate’s squares start at the top-left, so the last row and column can be narrower.

File format and size

Each result keeps the original’s format and is named after the blur: photo.jpg becomes photo_gaussian.jpg. JPGs are saved at a high 92% quality, WebP stays WebP, and PNGs stay PNG, with transparent backgrounds kept. Browsers can’t save GIF, AVIF or BMP images, so those come out as JPG, or as PNG if they have transparent areas. iPhone HEIC photos come out as JPG, and phone photos stored sideways with a rotation tag come out upright.

Blurred photos make small files. A 1600 × 1200 test photo, a 190 KB JPG, came out as a 75 KB JPG with the default gaussian blur; saved as PNG, as this tool used to, it was 740 KB.

Pixelated images are the exception: their flat squares suit PNG, which keeps every edge sharp, while JPG can soften the edges slightly. For crisp pixel art, convert the photo to PNG first, then pixelate the PNG.

Your images never leave your device

Your browser does the blurring, on your own phone or computer, so your images and the blurred copies are never uploaded or sent anywhere.

To check, open your browser’s developer tools and watch the Network tab while you blur an image. The only requests are the page’s own code (such as the HEIC decoder) and anonymous usage counts, described in our privacy policy. After your first visit, the tool works offline too.

Frequently asked questions

How do I blur an image for free?

Add it above, choose Gaussian, set the Blur Radius and press Apply Blur, then Download. There’s no sign-up, no watermark and no limit.

Can I blur just part of an image, like a face?

Not with this tool: it blurs the whole image. To hide part of a picture, cover it with a solid box in an image editor, or crop it out if it’s near an edge.

Is pixelating text a safe way to hide it?

No. Pixelated or blurred text can sometimes be recovered or guessed. For anything sensitive, use a solid box or remove it, and check the saved copy.

How do I pixelate an image?

Choose Pixelate and set the Pixel Size. Bigger numbers make bigger squares, and a big photo needs a bigger number for the same look.

How do I blur the background of a photo?

This tool blurs everything, including the subject. For a sharp subject on a soft background, use your phone’s portrait mode or an editor with masks.

How do I add motion blur?

Choose Motion, set the Blur Amount for the length of the streak, and the Angle: 0° for sideways movement, 90° for up and down.

What format is the blurred image saved in?

The same as the original: JPG stays JPG (at 92% quality), PNG stays PNG and WebP stays WebP. GIF, AVIF and BMP images become JPG, or PNG if they have transparency.

Can I blur lots of images at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like; they all get the same setting, and download together as a ZIP.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. They’re blurred in your browser, on your device, which is why the tool also works offline after your first visit.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, in Safari, Chrome and other modern browsers on phones, tablets and computers. On an iPhone, downloads go to Downloads in the Files app.
