How to convert JPG to PNG

  1. Add your JPGs

    PNG is already selected. It’s lossless, so there’s no quality to set: every pixel is copied exactly as it is.

  3. Download your PNGs

What JPG to PNG can and can’t do

When a JPG is saved, it’s compressed: some fine detail is thrown away, and smudged or blocky areas can creep in. Converting to PNG copies the picture exactly as it looks now. In our tests the PNG matched the JPG pixel for pixel.

  • It stops further loss. Each time a JPG is edited and saved again, it’s compressed again and loses a little more. A PNG can be saved as often as you like without changing.
  • It can’t restore quality. Blur, blockiness and smeared colours in the JPG are copied into the PNG exactly. No converter can bring back detail that has already been discarded.
  • It doesn’t make the background transparent. A white background stays white. PNG can hold transparency, but something has to remove the background first, and Image Toolkit doesn’t do that.

How much bigger the PNG will be

PNG keeps every pixel exactly, so the file grows, often several times over. These were converted on this page:

The more fine detail and grain a photo has, and the harder its JPG was compressed, the bigger the jump. Each converted file shows its old and new size, so you’ll see straight away what you’ve got.

When converting JPG to PNG is worth it

  • A website, app or template asks for PNG. Some only accept PNG files, and converting is the quickest way in.
  • You’ll edit the image over several sessions. Work on the PNG and save it as often as you like, then make a single JPG at the end if you need one.
  • You’re adding text, arrows or labels. Sharp lines and small lettering stay crisp in a PNG; saved as a JPG they pick up faint smudges.

It isn’t worth it for sharing or storing photos: the PNG is several times bigger and looks the same. To make a photo smaller, compress the JPG or resize it instead.

Date, location and rotation

The PNG holds the picture and nothing else. EXIF data in the JPG, such as the date taken, the camera model and the GPS location, isn’t copied. That’s useful before you share a photo, but apps that sort by date taken won’t find a date. To see what a photo contains first, use the EXIF viewer, or read how to remove the location from a photo.

Phone photos stored sideways with a rotation tag come out upright, so the PNG looks the way the photo does in your gallery.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve the quality?

No. The PNG is an exact copy of the JPG as it looks now, including any blur or blockiness. It won’t get worse when you save it again, but it won’t get better either.

Is converting JPG to PNG lossless?

Yes. Nothing more is lost: every pixel of the JPG is copied into the PNG exactly. The loss happened earlier, when the JPG was saved, and it stays.

How much bigger will the PNG be than the JPG?

Several times bigger. Photos in our tests grew between 4 and 16 times, depending on how much detail they had and how hard the JPG was compressed. That’s the cost of storing every pixel exactly.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

No. Converting keeps the picture as it is, so a white or coloured background stays. Image Toolkit doesn’t remove backgrounds; you’d need an editor that does, saving the result as PNG.

How can I make the PNG file smaller?

Give it fewer pixels with Resize: halving the width and height leaves a quarter of the pixels, and the file shrinks with them. If the site you’re uploading to accepts JPG after all, the original JPG is the smaller file.

Does it work with .jpeg files as well as .jpg?

Yes. JPG and JPEG are the same format, so files ending in .jpg, .jpeg or .JPG all work, and each is saved with a .png extension.

Can I convert lots of JPGs to PNG at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, press Process, then Download ZIP. If two files end up with the same name, such as photo.jpg and photo.jpeg, the ZIP saves the second as photo-1.png, so nothing is overwritten.

Are my photos uploaded when I convert them?

No. Your photos are converted in your browser, on your own device, and never sent anywhere.
