How to convert WebP to JPG

  1. Add your WebP files

    Drop .webp images onto the box above, or click it to choose them. Add one or as many as you like.

    JPEG is already selected, at 85% quality unless you’ve changed it before. That suits almost every image, so you can press Process straight away.

Why you have a WebP file

WebP is an image format Google introduced in 2010 to make web pages load faster. By Google’s own figures, lossy WebP images are 25 to 34% smaller than JPGs of comparable quality, so many websites and image services send WebP to any browser that can display it, which today means every current one.

When you save an image from a web page, you get the file the site sent. A picture that looked like any other photo arrives as a .webp, and while browsers open it without trouble, older programs, some photo editors and many upload forms still expect JPG or PNG. Converting to JPG gives you a file that works everywhere.

What to expect from the JPG

  • The file usually gets bigger. WebP compresses more efficiently than JPG, so the same picture needs more bytes as a JPG. Two 512 × 512 photos saved as WebP went from 35 KB to 58 KB and from 22 KB to 38 KB at 85% quality.
  • Quality is kept, not improved. Any softness or blockiness in the WebP carries over into the JPG, and JPG compression adds a little of its own, which at 85% is very hard to see.
  • The size in pixels doesn’t change. A 1200 × 800 WebP gives a 1200 × 800 JPG. To make it smaller, use Resize afterwards.

Lowering the quality to 70% brought the first photo down to 41 KB, close to its WebP size. Setting 100% made it 231 KB, more than six times the WebP, for nothing you could see: the WebP’s detail was fixed when it was first saved, so there’s nothing extra for a higher setting to keep.

Transparent and animated WebPs

WebP can hold transparency and animation. JPG can hold neither, so:

  • Transparent areas turn white, and soft edges blend into the white. A photo cut out in a transparent oval came out as the oval on a white rectangle. To keep the transparency, use WebP to PNG instead.
  • Animated WebPs become a still image of the first frame. This converter saves still images only; it doesn’t make GIFs or videos.
  • EXIF data, such as a date or camera details, isn’t copied if the WebP has any. The JPG holds the picture only.

Frequently asked questions

Why won’t my WebP image open?

The program you’re using probably doesn’t support WebP. Every current web browser does, so you can view it by dragging it into a browser window, but to edit, print or upload it elsewhere, convert it to JPG here.

Why do websites use WebP instead of JPG?

Smaller files make pages load faster and use less data. A WebP typically looks the same as a JPG at a quarter to a third less size, and every current browser can display it, so many sites send WebP by default.

Why is the JPG bigger than the WebP file?

JPG is an older, less efficient format, so it needs more bytes for the same picture. At the default 85%, the JPGs in our tests were one and a half to two and a half times the size of their WebPs. Lower the quality to about 70% if size matters more than a small loss of detail.

Does converting WebP to JPG lose quality?

A little, because the picture is compressed again as a JPG. At 85% the difference is very hard to see. Nothing already lost in the WebP comes back, whatever quality you choose.

What happens to a WebP with a transparent background?

The background turns white, because JPG can’t store transparency. For logos, icons and cut-outs, convert with WebP to PNG to keep it.

Can I convert an animated WebP to JPG?

You’ll get a JPG of the first frame only. JPG can’t store animation.

Should I convert WebP to JPG or PNG?

JPG for photos: it’s far smaller and opens everywhere. One 512 × 512 photo came out at 58 KB as JPG and 416 KB as PNG. Choose PNG for images with a transparent background, text or sharp lines.

Can I convert several WebP files to JPG at once?

Yes. Add them all, press Process once, then Download ZIP to save every JPG in one file, converted_images.zip.

Is my WebP uploaded to convert it?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, on your own device, so your images are never sent anywhere.
