Resize Images for Instagram

Instagram’s help centre says photos wider than 1080 pixels are sized down to 1080, so the sizes below are all 1080 wide. The height sets the shape:

Since May 2025, feed photos can also be 3:4, the shape most phone cameras use, shown uncropped in single posts and carousels. An upright phone photo is usually 3:4 already, so choose Max Width (already set to 1080 here) and it comes out 1080 × 1440 with nothing cut off.

Since January 2025, your profile grid shows each post as a 3:4 preview rather than a square. The post itself isn’t changed, but its preview is trimmed to fit the taller tile: a 4:5 post loses a thin strip, about 3% of its width, from each side, and a square post loses an eighth of its width from each side.

If the grid matters to you, keep faces and text away from the left and right edges.

The presets fill the frame exactly, with no stretching and no borders: the photo is scaled to cover the whole size, and whatever sticks out is trimmed evenly from both sides. For Instagram Portrait, that means:

An upright photo barely changes, but a landscape one loses its sides, so people at the ends of a group shot can be cut off. To choose what’s kept, crop first with the cropper. It has no 4:5 shape, but a 3:4 crop framed your way loses only about 3% from the top and bottom when resized here.

Or keep the whole picture: Instagram accepts landscape posts up to 1.91:1, so Max Width at 1080 posts a 4:3 or 3:2 photo uncropped, just shorter in the feed.

Add all of a carousel’s photos at once and they come out the same size and shape, so the slides line up. File names are kept (IMG_0412.jpg stays IMG_0412.jpg) unless you tick Add "_resized" suffix, and Download ZIP saves the whole set.

Instagram compresses every photo it receives, so start from the best copy you have: the original, not a screenshot or a copy sent through a messaging app.

• JPGs are saved at 92% quality. A 1080 × 1350 photo came out between 137 KB and 330 KB in our tests.
• iPhone HEIC photos come out as JPG, ready to post.
• PNGs stay PNG, transparency included. Instagram doesn’t reliably keep see-through backgrounds, so give a logo or cut-out a background first: PNG to JPG fills transparent areas with white.

The resized copies are saved without EXIF data, so the camera details and GPS location your phone recorded aren’t in the files you post. Your photos are resized in your browser and never uploaded.
