How to convert PNG to PDF

Lossless: every pixel goes in exactly

Your PNGs aren’t turned into JPGs on the way in. Their pixels are stored in the PDF exactly as they are, with the same kind of lossless compression PNG itself uses, so text in a screenshot stays crisp and flat colours stay flat. (The one exception is a rare PNG that depends on a rotation tag to display upright: it’s redrawn upright as a high-quality JPG.)

Because nothing is lost and nothing is added, the PDF comes out about the size of the PNGs. In our tests a 141 KB full-HD screenshot made a 146 KB PDF, and a 188 KB phone screenshot a PDF of the same size.

Converting screenshots to JPG first would only blur the edges of the text. Photos saved as PNG are different: PNG makes them very large, so convert them to JPG first if you want a much smaller PDF.

Transparent PNGs on a white page

Transparency is kept. Transparent areas show the page behind them, which is white on screen and on paper, so a logo on a transparent background looks just as it would on white, with soft edges and shadows blending into the page rather than turning black.

There’s no option for a coloured page. If you need a different background, add it to the image before you convert.
Empty transparent space around a logo or cut-out is still part of the image, and takes up room on the page. Trim it first so the picture itself fills the space.
Small images are enlarged to fill the page. A 200-pixel logo stretched across A4 will look soft when printed; choose Fit to image to keep it at its own size, or start from a larger PNG.

Screenshots and scans: choosing the page

Auto orientation turns each page to suit its image, so one PDF can mix wide and tall pages. Beyond that, the best settings depend on what your PNGs are:

PNGs	Settings that work well
Computer screenshots	A4 or Letter with Auto orientation, so wide screenshots get landscape pages. A 1920 × 1080 screenshot across landscape A4 prints at about 170 pixels per inch: sharp, though text that was small on screen is small on paper too.
Phone screenshots	They’re tall and narrow, so on A4 they fill the height with wide white borders either side. Fit to image gives each one its own tall page, which is easier to scroll through on screen.
Scanned pages	The paper size you scanned, with the margin at 0 so the scan fills the page. A 300 dpi scan of an A4 sheet is 2480 × 3508 pixels, exactly the shape of the page.
Logos and graphics	Fit to image for a page the size of the graphic, or A4 with a margin to print it on paper.

Before you convert

Crop screenshots to the part that matters, such as one window or one conversation. It makes the text bigger on the page, too.
Look for anything you didn’t mean to share: notifications, other tabs, names, email addresses or account numbers. Crop it out, rather than blurring it, which doesn’t reliably hide text.
Pages in the PDF are pictures, so their text can’t be searched, selected or copied. If that matters, keep the original document too.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting PNG to PDF lose quality?

No. The PNG’s pixels are stored in the PDF exactly, with lossless compression, so nothing is lost: the pixels on each page are the pixels in your image.

Will a transparent PNG get a black background in the PDF?

No. The transparency is kept, so transparent areas show the white page behind them, on screen and when printed.

How do I combine multiple PNG files into one PDF?

Add them all, at once or a few at a time, drag them into order and press Create PDF. Each PNG becomes one page of the same PDF, images.pdf.

How big will the PDF be?

About the same size as the PNGs added together, since their pixels are stored with the same kind of compression. Screenshots make small PDFs; photos saved as PNG make big ones, so convert those to JPG first.

Why does my PNG look blurry in the PDF?

A small image is enlarged to fill the page, which spreads its pixels further apart. Choose Fit to image to keep it at its own size, or use a larger version of the image.

What page size should I use for a scanned document?

The size of the paper you scanned, usually A4 or Letter, with the margin set to 0. The scan then fills the page, as the original did.

Can I search or copy the text in the PDF?

No. Each page is a picture of the text, not text itself. Searching needs text recognition (OCR), which this tool doesn’t do.

Can I convert PNG to PDF on a phone?

Yes, in Safari, Chrome and other modern mobile browsers. Tap the box to choose your screenshots, put them in order and create the PDF; nothing is uploaded.
